Most people would like to have a set of perfectly straight teeth. In the past, the only way to achieve this was with a mouthful of metal wires and brackets. While that option is still available, another option that has become popular in recent years is Invisalign clear aligners.
Invisalign aligners are made of SmartTrack®, a proprietary material that is multilayered and virtually invisible. The aligners are custom-made so that they fit snugly over your teeth. The system works by creating a series of aligners that are each slightly different so that, as they are worn in a specific order, your teeth are gradually nudged into their new position until you are left with a straight smile by the end of treatment.
Invisalign offers a number of advantages over metal braces, which, though effective, are not only unsightly and uncomfortable, but are also challenging to manage.
During an initial consultation, a customized plan will be created. Measurements will be taken of the teeth so that the aligners can be created. You will be required to wear a new set of aligners every week, or according to the plan set out by your dentist. They must be worn for 20 to 22 hours a day, and regular visits to the dentist will be necessary – about every six weeks – in order to check on the progress of the smile. Treatment generally lasts 12 months, though it varies depending on the age of the patient and the severity of the case. At the end of treatment, a retainer is recommended to keep the teeth from shifting back to their former positions.
