Veneers are an effective option for correcting stained, chipped, decayed, or crooked teeth. Dr. Thurmond’s dental office in Raleigh, NC can help you achieve a smile you’re happy with using our in-office CEREC technology.
Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front of the teeth. They can be used for a variety of reasons:
To place veneers, anesthesia may or may not be used, depending on the sensitivity level of the patient. The dentist will first clean the tooth and, with your input, choose the shade (color) of the veneer. A small amount of enamel will have to be removed from the surface of your tooth in order to make room for the veneer to be placed. Usually, the procedure for placing veneers takes two visits – one to prepare the tooth and make an impression and another to actually place the veneer(s) once they arrive back from a dental lab. CEREC technology makes it possible to eliminate the waiting period for the veneers and instead have them created in-office on the same day. Once the tooth (or teeth) have been prepared, then, a camera will take a digital picture of your teeth. This image is converted into a 3D image which is used to create the veneer. Once it has been made, the tooth receiving the veneer will be polished and etched, which roughens its surface and allows the veneer to bond more easily. A special cement is used to attach the veneer, which is then light contoured in order to harden it. The dentist will make adjustments to the veneer as necessary and clean and polish it to finish the procedure. You may have to return for a follow-up appointment so that she can check on the fit.
