Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which is the best?

Teeth replacements are very common since very long. The reason for missing or extracted teeth is usually infection. An appropriate replacement is a key to a confident smile. You must be thinking what the difference between a dental bridge and implant is. Which option is right? There are several factors which need to consider whether you have lost tooth recently or years ago.

Dental bridges and implants are made differently. A bridge is made of an artificial tooth which is fixed between two crowns. With speciality dentistry, get them cemented onto natural teeth on either side.

An implant is also an artificial tooth which is attached to the titanium. The Periodontist or oral surgeon inserts it into the jawbone. The artificial teeth, in either case, are matched to the color of the surrounding teeth. The bridge would be little noticeable because unlike implant, the artificial teeth aren’t planted into the gum.

For discolored, worn down, chipped, broken, misaligned, uneven or irregular shaped teeth and spaces between the teeth, dental veneers is also the best option. Dental veneers also known as porcelain veneers are wafer-thin, custom-made tooth-colored materials. These are designed to cover the front surface of the teeth that improves the appearance.

Porcelain veneers offer following benefits-

  • Provides natural tooth appearance.
  • Gum tissue easily tolerates the porcelain.
  • The color of a porcelain veneer can be chosen as of the natural tooth.
  • Not much expensive and are stronger and aesthetically appealing.

Veneers generally last for 7 to 15 years and after you require replacement. A bridge is appropriate for replacing the missing tooth where adjacent teeth are also involved. Whereas, dental implants replace the individual tooth and are stronger and permanent.

Types of dental implants-

  • Endosteal implants: These are directly implanted into the jawbone during surgery. Once the gum tissue heals, an artificial tooth is placed.
  • Subperiosteal implants: A metal is fitted onto the jawbone below the gum tissue. Frame fixes as the gums heal and an artificial tooth is planted.

Benefits of dental implants-

  • Low maintenance: Dental implants last for a lifetime if they are of high-quality and require little maintenance.
  • Looks natural: Dental implants look and functions like natural teeth. They are strong and stable as well.
  • Protects jawbone: Missing tooth deteriorates the jawbone. Dental implants preserve natural bone growth and prevent bone loss.

The surgery is required for attaching the implant to the bone. There could be chances of infection, nerve damage, jaw fractures and more. Bone heals slowly and takes up to 3 months. The cost of implants depends on the type and condition of the tooth issue.

Types of dental bridges-

  • Traditional bridges: This is made of ceramic or porcelain attached to the metal. It is created by a crown for the tooth or implant on either side of the gap.
  • Cantilever bridges: This is suitable when the adjacent teeth are found on one side of the gap of missing teeth.

Benefits of dental bridges-

  • The procedure is simple: There is no need for surgery in bridges and it is less painful.
  • Affordable: Bridges are not much expensive and strong and supportive.

Dental bridges are not natural-looking as dental implants and need to replace it every 5-7 years. A lot of preparation is required to the adjacent teeth to remove the amount of tooth structure.

Many people tend to grind their teeth at night while sleeping. The dentist might notice the wear and tear that start appearing on your teeth. This is a sign of bruxism. Protect your dental implants and bridges from getting damaged with a custom-made nightguard. These are not only for athletes. Nightguard is a perfect solution to stop the wear and tear on the teeth often caused by teeth grinding.

Whether a dental implant is right for you or bridges, consider after consulting the dentist. They will check your mouth and possess the appropriate tools and knowledge to guide you through what is best. Bridges are an older procedure and dental implants are preferred from over the years. The treatment is preferred based on time and expense.
